Do you believe in vampires? Guest post by author Maya Tyler

Today I have on my blog, Maya Tyler, paranormal romance author. She’s here to share the truth about researching vampires.

Over to Maya.

………………………

Do you believe in vampires?

Good fiction is believable, introducing the possibility of truth to the reader. How to create believable fiction? An author can use history to authenticate a fictional story. What if there is no basis in reality? My paranormal world—filled with angels, vampires, wizards—is not real and cannot be based on fact. What, other than fact, can be used to persuade a reader to believe?

Vampires are (most likely) fictitious, yet an astounding amount of information exists out there—scores of books, TV shows and movies, and websites—each source with their unique take on this fascinating creature. The sources vary—from true believer to complete skeptic—and are often contradictory. How can a vampire both burn, and walk, in the sunlight? As I looked deeper, I uncovered a compelling world rivalling even our own reality. Still, I faced the dilemma of selecting which combination of traits would make up my vampire—

Marisa’s mind raced… “This is unbelievable.”

“What?” Corgan smirked. “The little you actually know about vampires?”

“For your information, I can tell the difference between truth and the Hollywood version.”

Corgan looked at her with a raised eyebrow.

“I can,” she insisted. “No coffins, blood with healing properties, flying, super speed, super strength, immortal, mind-reading, fortune-telling, death by sun…”

— From A Vampire’s Tale

—and determining the customs, rituals, and laws of this ancient culture.

Research, imagination, and a bit of common sense led to the creation of my vampire, Corgan Halton. I approached the process conservatively, not wishing to re-invent the wheel or introduce new “unbelievable” elements, but to present a clearly defined and realistic being that inspired readers to ask “what if?” And, with that question, to take a leap of faith. Are vampires real? Believe in the impossible.

…………….

Thanks, Maya. Believe in the impossible, indeed. Where paranormal is concerned, possibilities are endless. I’m sure readers are anxious to know something about the book. So here goes.

A Vampire’s Tale

The best laid plans…

Marisa Clements was never satisfied writing the ‘gossip column’ in the local paper and she quit her job to follow her dream of writing fiction. Floundering in an unforgiving industry, she wrote about vampires, a popular subject she considered fascinating but as real as unicorns, to pay the rent.

Corgan was tired of human misconceptions about vampires and ‘living’ as a vampire. He planned to tell Marisa his story and end his existence. It was no coincidence Corgan selected Marisa to write his story. With the ability to see the future, he knew she would be a major part of it. He knew if they met, she would help him die, but in doing so, she’d be doomed to the same fate. Once they met, their futures would be irrevocably intertwined.

Corgan began to care for Marisa and finally revealed the truth to her. He admitted his quest to atone for his past sins had put her in grave danger from a nest of revenge seeking vampires. Corgan must claim her for her own protection. But claiming her is not enough, he must ask for help from his wizard friends and his maker in order to destroy his enemy or Marisa will never be safe.

Excerpt:

Under the cover of dusk, the city lights came alive. Her view, slightly obstructed by the rickety fire escape, did not keep her from seeing the flashing neon signs lining the street below.    That’s it. She’d wasted hours on this novel, immediately deleting every word she typed. The cursor blinked mockingly on the otherwise blank page of her document. Write something. Anything.

With her apartment now shrouded in darkness, intermittently illuminated by the street lights, Marisa Clements lit the white pillar candle on her desk. Its orange flame cast long shadows against the wall. So I can see what I’m not writing. An eclectic mix of music serenaded her from the neighborhood, a reminder of Lincoln Park’s active nightlife, a distinct contrast to her quiet Friday night at home.

The candle flickered and a cold shiver travelled down her spine. Then it came to her. Fingers poised over the keyboard, she typed.

And his eyes glowed with unholy flames.

She squirmed in her chair. Marisa could see the dark stranger, clad in black, standing before her like a real being. He blended with the shadows, the dim room serving as apt camouflage, except for his eyes. They bore straight through her.

What do you mean “like a real being”?

She jumped in her seat. Yikes. A little too real. Alone in her apartment, the voice could only be a figment of her imagination. She shivered with anticipation as her fingers flew over the keys of her beloved laptop. This would be her best story yet. To hell with all the non-believers—her wealthy, socialite parents who’d disowned her when she’d left business school, and the “so-called” friends who told her to get a real job. This was a real job… It paid the bills, after all. Sort of. It paid the minimum balance on her credit card.

Why did people choose the mundane office job—she shuddered—plastering themselves to a desk from nine-to-five? Sitting at a desk to write was completely different. No boss, no stress… No money, if she didn’t get her head out of the clouds and back to her latest vamp.

He didn’t have a name yet, but he had a face. A dark, mysterious face with a century’s worth of secrets. Secrets he would tell her, only her, if she would listen.

Marisa took a deep, calming breath. “I’m listening.” She closed her eyes, waiting. A cool breeze shifted her hair and her eyes popped open. The old floorboards creaked, and she spun her chair around. “Who’s there?” The candle blew out. “What the—”

Time—and her heartbeat—stood still. Paranoia set in, the consequence of writing too many vampire stories. She must’ve left a window open. Or something. She re-lit the candle and turned her attention back to her laptop, staring at the last words she’d typed.

Corgan Halton.

She didn’t remember typing that.

“Corgan Halton.” She said the name slowly. “I like that.” She’d written a dozen vampire stories and this would be her best name yet. It had an old-worldly feel to it. Like a real name. She’d better look it up to make sure it wasn’t a real name; she didn’t need a lawsuit. Did people sue for name infringement?

“Okay, Corgan Halton. Are you real?” She typed the name into a search engine.

“As real as you are.” The distinctive male voice resonated in the otherwise quiet room.

Marisa froze. She didn’t dare turn around. It was her overactive imagination at play. There was no one there. She hoped. Maybe one of her friends? Is this a joke?

“Not a joke, Marisa.”

Gasping, she stood and spun around toward the sound of his voice.

As he stepped out of the shadows, she took in the man before her. Pale with black, curly hair, dressed in an impeccable suit. Dark and intimidating, he stood in her living room, shrinking the already small space.

Exactly as she’d imagined. She conjured him from her imagination? No… This is not happening.

She rubbed her unbelieving eyes. There couldn’t actually be anyone there. When did she last eat? Did low blood sugar cause hallucinations?

He smiled at her, and the temperature in the room dropped several degrees.

“Who are you?” she demanded.

“Corgan Halton.” He gave a courtly bow. “At your service.”

No… She stared at him in shocked silence. It isn’t possible.

“I assure you, my dear, it’s entirely possible.”

“Do you read minds, too?” She held her breath and waited for his reply.

“You tell me. You’re the vampire expert.”

Vampire? He’s a vampire?

Not another “cookie cutter romance” novel

“As a rule, I am not a big fan of romance novels…“A Vampire’s Tale” was less about the “romance” and more about Corgan’s life and his mission to tell his story to this exceptional human…Maya Tyler has managed to show this jaded romance skeptic that there is still such a thing as a sweet love story.”

“Chemistry is the not the word… The heat between Piya and Arfaaz in More Than Just Desire is sizzling! Summerita Rhayne has done it again by creating strong, believable characters. Piya is headstrong and selfish, but those character flaws are her shield against an intense fear of being alone. Arfaaz thinks he’s out for revenge, but finds the intense emotion he feels for Piya is love not hate. These characters may seem like opposites, but they have much in common. They have both overcome difficult, humble beginnings. Neither trust the other. Or themselves. Together they sizzle in this easy to read romance set in exotic India. I was instantly captivated by this story and I would highly recommend it.”

#free for today Maya Tyler’s Dream Hunter

Free book alert!
Here’s something from Maya about her debut book.
………..
Maya Tyler’s Dream Hunter is about Cynthia’s dreams… dreams so real, the lines of reality have blurred. But the publication of Dream Hunter didn’t only bring Cynthia’s dreams to life; they made my dreams come true too.
Hi, I’m Maya Tyler and my lifelong dream was to become an author so (ironically) my debut novella is about dreams.
I love to read. Reading (fiction) is about escape; a way to experience something different and unknown without leaving the comforts of your domain. I write paranormal romance so I can test the boundaries of this experience. When reading my book, I don’t want you just to seek the happy ending; I want you to experience the journey.
Come meet my characters, Cynthia and Gabe in Dream Hunter… available free on Amazon for one more day – March 20, 2015.

Excerpt:

The air in her lungs rushed to escape and time stood still. She was aware of only him. Beyond her control, her head tilted and her whole body leaned toward him; her inner core pulsed and buzzed. He drew her in like a magnet, a moth to flame; she was helpless to resist his siren call. He emulated danger, looked like evil incarnate—black and dangerous, seductive and forbidden—and she wanted him.

When he grabbed her harshly by both shoulders, she snapped out of her lust-induced trance. “What do you think you’re doing?” she demanded.

“We must get out of here.” His words were calm, but his eyes stared right through her.

Cynthia opened her mouth to object.

“There is no time,” he announced as he tugged on her arm.

“Let go of me!” She tried to pull away. “I don’t know you.”

Holding her arm still, he stared into her eyes without saying a word.

Okay, he seems a little familiar. She gulped. “How do I know you?”

Giving her a penetrating look, he replied, “You know me. Quit wasting time.”

She opened her mouth to protest again.

“We must leave now.”

Should I go with him? She tilted her head and looked up at him. His gaze was strong and steady and made her feel safe. This is not the time to be indecisive. She thought about the threat at work and shivered despite the heat.

You will be safe with me. There is no time. We must leave now. His voice entered her thoughts like a caress in her mind and didn’t alarm her.

He was right. There was no time to analyze her options and run through various scenarios. For all she knew, every scenario without him could mean danger for her. Her body wanted to follow him, she admitted with reluctance, even if her mind resisted. Yes, she would go, she decided, even as she felt herself following him down the street.

Power resonated from his muscular build. He kept a hand in a firm but gentle hold on her elbow as they hurried down the sidewalk. Unmindful of their destination, Cynthia had ample time to study her new “friend.” He towered over her by at least a foot, wearing a black leather jacket despite the warm day, and dark jeans that showcased his narrow waist. Every beefy inch of him screamed passion and strength—his tight clothing doing nothing to disguise the sinewy muscles rippling in his legs as he moved—but she wasn’t frightened of him. She hesitated for a minute. Should I be afraid? No, she decided. She felt eerily calm, like all her life had been leading her up to this moment in time, and she was exactly where she was supposed to be. The reason she let a perfect stranger lead her to God-knew-where.

She shifted her thick hair over her shoulder as sweat soaked at the base of her neck. The day’s temperature had yet to peak, but it was already warm enough to be uncomfortable and practically running in office attire didn’t help matters.

“I need a moment,” she said.

They made an abrupt stop. The man offered her an unopened bottle of water. After casting an assessing look at him she accepted the bottle, and took a long, welcome drink.

“Thank you.”

The man dismissed her thanks with a casual shrug.

Cynthia shot him a questioning look.

“Later,” he replied in a brisk voice. “We need to go.”

“Where?”

“We need to go,” he repeated, ignoring her question.

They had covered several blocks and, as they moved further from her office, the sights became less familiar and a tremor of fear shook through her body. Where did this guy come from? Why does he think I know him? Because I do know him. The realization hit her hard in the stomach. It’s him.

“I need—”

“We need to keep going,” he insisted without further explanation.

“No!” She planted her hands on her hips and her feet in the firmest stance she could manage as she wobbled on the uneven sidewalk. Then she looked down at her feet and a strange sense of déjà vu washed over her as she stared at the cobblestone path. Her mouth gaped, her breathing quickened. With dread she looked up at the buildings on the street. Her vision blurred. Everything around her spun and faded away as she collapsed into strong arms. She had a vague awareness of him lifting her. As he adjusted his hold, she bounced against his solid chest. She must be dreaming. That was the only explanation that made sense. Nothing like this ever happened in her boring, ordinary life. It’s just a dream. Swallowing her disappointment, she glanced up at the determined expression on his face. He carried her effortlessly, like she weighed nothing. When she rested her head on his chest, she could feel his heart beating steadily. She ran her hand lightly across his defined bicep. Wow. He wasn’t real, but she might as well make the most of it; from experience she knew her dream wouldn’t last forever.

…………………………………………………

My Writing Journey: The Precursor to Dream Hunter by Maya Tyler

“Life is a journey, not a destination.”

– Ralph Waldo Emerson

Once upon a time there was a little girl with a big dream. She wanted to become a writer. As the little girl grew up, her plans for the future grew up too. Instead of writing, she went to university and earned a business degree in accounting. She worked a Monday-to-Friday, nine-to-five job day in and day out, always wondering in the back of her mind “if only”.

Life changed. She got married, bought a house, bought another house, bought a puppy, had a baby. Then her husband got sick and all priorities changed. She picked up writing again, had another baby. Life was short and she learned you never knew what lay just around the corner. In a responsible way, they adopted a “you only live once” policy. They started seriously saving for the future, paying down the mortgage, and taking their kids on trips.

She realized that life passes all of us by in the blink of an eye and she didn’t want any more regret. So she got serious about writing again, juggling the day job with the husband and kids. She acknowledged her dream was still to become a writer.

Writing is a process, a journey. When you read a book, it doesn’t seem that hard to string letters together to make words, words together to make sentences, etc. But it is. Everything seems simple until you try it for yourself. 🙂 But everything worth having is worth working for.

How did I get here? Everything that happened in my life had brought me to this moment in time, shaped the person I am. My husband doesn’t like being sick, but he maintains that his disability has made him a better person. Maybe it’s made me a better person too? It certainly was a wake-up call. Life is fragile, precious, and fleeting. Whether I have five years or fifty left on this Earth, I want to make the most of it.

My hopes and dreams for the future are simple. I want to take care of my family, be the best person I can be, and make the world a better place for my kids. Our needs are simple too. Modest roof over our heads, healthy food in our stomachs. And I want to live life without regret.

It’s difficult to focus on the future without first examining the past. I imagine that most people have some regret. Something they wish they could do over. The choices I’ve made shape the person I’ve become. If I changed everything in my life I regret, then I wouldn’t be me. Instead I will take those experiences and incorporate them into my writing framework.

I have a very overactive imagination; it’s probably what makes me conjure up such fantastic story ideas. Plus I have some crazy dreams (see above about story ideas). I love telling a story. I always wrote when I was a kid and, now, I enjoy making up stories for my kids (or re-telling the classics in a not so classic way). This love of story-telling has propelled me into achieving a lifelong dream of writing a book.

My first publication is a novella called Dream Hunter, a story I wrote inspired by a dream I had.

Cynthia’s dreams are so real, they are actually coming true – complete with the prerequisite dream guy. But things are not as they seem.

Who said dreams are sweet?

Chicago businesswoman Cynthia Courtland is completely focused on her career when a sensual, reoccurring dream disrupts her orderly life. Then a threat against her workplace forces her to take time off. She is lost with nowhere to go – only her empty apartment.

Work is Gabe’s life too; he takes it very seriously and will do whatever it takes to succeed. He is watching over Cynthia and he has her best interests at heart, but he isn’t who he seems.

Cynthia insists on investigating the threat so she can get back to work. When things settle, will there be more for them than a life filled with work? Will she give her dreams a chance to come true?

Cynthia’s dream come to life was the existence of her hero, Gabe. My dream brings them both to life within the pages of Dream Hunter.

I am inspired to tell a story. I have many stories left to tell. My dream to write is not complete with the publication of one novella. The end of Dream Hunter is not the end, but merely signifies the start of a new beginning, a new chapter of my life, the start of my writing journey. And it all starts on December 30th with the release of…
