How far can one truly go away from his/her ancestral roots, filial ties and the claustrophobic grip of traditions and the reminiscence of an emotionally fraught childhood and puberty? The book begins with this particular quest, and it is this quest which gains momentum as a woman seeks the essence of herself-identity ten thousand miles away from her Bengali hometown.
With the lens of a time-traveler, her narrative journey encompasses her first sexual abuse, her first tryst with death, austerity, the strangeness of rituals, the inexplicable feelings of puberty and also her surrendering to love, procreation, motherhood. In herself-chosen exile in the US, she discovers that deep within; her ancestral roots are also the wellspring of her psychological, spiritual existence. In the process, she keeps on oscillating between assimilating and disintegrating, which forms the core of her journey.

About the author

Veronica Thatcher is an exciting new contemporary romance author. Ever since she was very young, she’s dreamed of becoming a doctor when she grew up. While still forging ahead with that, majoring in pre-med in college, she unwittingly stumbled upon a new dream—becoming a published author. Some may call her an introvert or a wallflower, but she has always found she could express herself better in written, rather than spoken, words. However, never in her wildest dreams had she envisioned she would pursue writing as a prospective career, not just a hobby. Her love for writing goes hand-in-hand with her love for a good romance novel—whether it be a feel-good, sweet romance or a dark, suspenseful one.

When she’s not studying, reading, or writing, she is usually found blasting her favourite songs, sometimes singing and dancing along to them. She dabbles in a number of activities, including painting, karate, singing and dancing. She is a huge chocoholic – probably the biggest – and she is an ice-cream junkie too. She considers herself technologically handicapped forever and has no shame in admitting that. She also deems chocolates her boyfriend, Patrick Dempsey the love of her life, and Friends her life!

Her first book, A Way Back Into Love, is slated for release in February 2017, and she hopes readers will enjoy it as much as she enjoyed writing it.

Blurb:

What happens when the terrible twos come in threes?
Stuti loves being a mother to her triplets, but it can be a harrowing routine. She’s even more submerged in the craziness when she takes them and her mom-in-law for a trip to Rajasthan, the land of the erstwhile Thar desert royals and their palaces. After the passing away of her husband, she feels she owes it to her mil to take her to her favourite holiday. In the Amber Palace, her reckless toddler rushes onto a modelling shoot. As she picks up her daughter who has tripped over a gorgeous zardozi sari, her gaze clashes with that of the man she’d hoped never to set eyes on again in her life.
A passion that threatens to set fire to more than just her senses
Revath was everything she wanted in a man, but six years ago he chose to walk away from her. Now he wants to be back in her life. When she knows he doesn’t want the same things in life that she does, would she be wise to let anything rekindle between them? Is it already too late for rethinks?
Desire that has to be denied
Revath knew the moment he met Stuti again that he couldn’t just let her go. But Stuti is absolutely the wrong woman for him. It was proved six years ago when they chose diametrically opposite ways for themselves. He doesn’t believe in forever, so what’s he doing asking her for a second chance?

Excerpt

‘You have everything a man wants. Money, women fawning over you, the work you love…’

‘Everything, except you.’ He put his hand on hers, gripping it on the rail. He felt her jerk in shock. Contact rapidly evoked what time hadn’t sufficiently buried.

‘I have missed you. A lot more than you think.’ His whisper grated the air close to her.

‘Don’t let’s go there, Revath.’

His fist curled even more strongly on hers. He wished he could heed her words. They were sanity. A timely warning. But the storm inside was let loose. He took away his hand but only to grasp her upper arms to draw her close.

‘Revath!’

‘Do you think any woman could be what you were to me?’ Her eyes widened as the words registered and he felt her relax slightly, the tension ebbing from her.

‘I mean it, Stuti.’

She didn’t resist as he brought his head close to hers. His mouth touched her cheek and then irresistibly, inevitably, her mouth.

Time seem to dissolve. His head swam with the rush of feeling. He realized he had been only half alive as a surge of sensation invaded his body, rushing through his veins with the speed of storm winds.

He didn’t care if her mother in law saw them. He didn’t care if the staff did. He didn’t care if the whole of Rajasthan became a witness to the kiss. All he knew was he needed it. Needed her surrender to the rage of emotions swirling inside both of them. He was sure of that. She felt it too. He could feel the trembling in her, the shiver of anticipation as the initial shock of the kiss dissolved into insidious acceptance.

He was intoxicated by the scent of flowers, the sweetness of nectar. Her mouth parted and he deepened the kiss, not able to tell her but needing to show the emotion that was alive and tingling in his every fiber. She clung to him, fingers digging in his shirt and the vortex intensified to a sucking maelstrom.

This was what he wanted. Needed. The woman in his arms was all softness and desire. The hunger spread more quickly than he had thought possible. Her mouth fused to his, clung, parted and clung again and the flame of wanting became a fire. Her fingers tugged at fistfuls of his shirt. She moaned, the sound heady, hitting his gut and evoking a fierce possessiveness that made him catch her to him with force.

A wail came from somewhere distant and the next moment Stuti pushed against him and backed away to the railing. Widened eyes looked at him, a flush on her skin.

‘Don’t do that again, Revath. We can’t go back. Not now.’

She was gone.

Prologue ( A teaser)

J J School of Art, Mumbai.

Taking a charcoal pencil, Akash Saigal started drawing the wood-and-stone structure, popularly known as „Kipling Bungalow‟. He was sketching sitting on a bench on which, in another era, K K Hebbar, M F Husain, Syed Haider Raza, Sadanand Bakre, V S Gaitonde, even Dadasaheb Phalke had sat with their sketchbooks, sketching the house where the author of The Jungle Book was born.

Ganpat Gupte appeared along with two of his gang. Gupte was the nephew of a minister, or so he claimed, and had the arrogance that comes with power.

“Ae Akash, kae karto?”

Akash looked up at the trio and said, “Nothing much. Just a drawing.

“Okay. What is the day today?”

“I should have known.Tere ko blue shirt hai na?”

Akash didn‟t get the connection, but Gupte‟s chamchas laughed knowingly.

The three boys sang in unison, “Monday, blue shirt. Tuesday, black shirt. Wednesday, blue shirt. Thursday black shirt. Friday, blue shirt. Saturday, black shirt. Sunday…laundry!”

If Akash was hurt, he didn‟t show it. He laughed sheepishly and continued sketching the bungalow.

But he would never forget this.

AN EXCERPT – FROM LIVING WITH FIRE

Joshua was gaping at her, his mouth opening and closing silently like a fish out of water. There was a sudden increase in icy coldness, and he froze into a statue, his face now expressionless and his eyes drawn and unfathomable as always when he was deeply distressed or too emotional for his own good.“Can you hear yourself? You sound like some fatalistic, maniacal sect member or the leader of a dangerously foolish occult movement,” he said with that unnerving, neutral calm of his.

To cover up the disappointment and hurt and anger at his reaction, Felicia threw her head back and laughed coldly, mirthlessly. She tossed her hair over one shoulder, stood up straight and stared into his eyes.

“Thanks for the suggestion. I think I’d rather like that. An occult movement revolving around the power of fire. I’ll be the terrifying fire goddess ruling mercilessly, with everyone falling at their feet and offering me their heart on a platter. I’ll make the world burn until it puts the sun to shame. Want to stick around and watch, snowman?”

As soon as the words had left her mouth, she wanted to take them back. What had she just said? This wasn’t her, this wasn’t normal, this wasn’t right! This was her Joshua she was wounding and repelling…and yet, she would not take the words back. Didn’t she have every right to behave like this?

The choice is yours. Rise and shine. Go out and rule!

The voice inside her mind was so powerful she half thought she had spoken the words out loud.

Beside her, Kyle was cackling and clapping his hands, and her fire dragon was turning cartwheels a little ahead. There was so much heat around her, inside her. It needed out.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Almost as soon as Devika Fernando could write, she imagined stories and poems. After finishing her education in Germany and returning to her roots in Sri Lanka, she got a chance to turn her passion into her profession. Having lived in Germany and in Sri Lanka with her husband has made her experience the best (and the worst) of two totally different worlds – something that influences her writing. Her trademark is writing sweet and sensual, deeply emotional romance stories where the characters actually fall in love instead of merely falling in lust.
What she loves most about being an author is the chance to create new worlds and send her protagonists on a journey full of ups and downs that will leave them changed. She draws inspiration from everyone and everything in life. Besides being a romance novel author, Devika is a faithful servant to all the cats and dogs she has adopted. When she’s not writing, she’s reading or thinking about writing.

EXCERPT
‘You’ll divorce me?’ The sense of anticlimax she felt annoyed her. Why wouldn’t he, for God’s sake? She’d been far from an ideal partner. No man wanted a three year estranged wife surely? Or why would he allow her to remain away for so long? For no logical reason, the knowledge had a sharp edge, stabbing her insides deeply.

Arfaaz’s gaze was fixed on the flush deepening on her cheeks. The colour of anger…or joy at getting her freedom?

It had been a mistake to pick her up in his arms, to give in to the urge to subdue that stubborn defiance. Three years since he’d touched her, yet her bones felt as delicate under his hands as the night he’d gripped her shoulders in anger. Evoking the same remorse one might feel for handling a bird badly.

She had worn a metal colored dress that night. He could still feel the slithery fabric beneath his fingers. Another of her risqué dresses, with deceptively demure full sleeves while the shocker was the back. Which was missing. He had never objected to what she wore, though primitive instincts protested. She had a media image to maintain. He hadn’t wanted to act the possessive husband.

A mistake, he thought again. Even the brief brush of her body against his had lit a spark that reminded him of how possessive he’d wanted to be.

She had taken enough advantage of him. The grim thought rose from a host of emotions. He’d suffered, he’d been fooled, he’d been dumped. Was he going to take it all and let her go as easy as pie?

‘If you want a divorce, you’ll have to do a small favour for me first,’ he told her.

‘Favour?’

‘Something which is important to me. Then you’ll be free to go.’

‘I will?’

He shrugged, letting her make what she could out of it.

‘Anyway, we can’t stand here and talk it out. Come inside. We’ll discuss it over dinner.’

‘Yes, divorce must be one of the prime discussable topics for dinnertime conversation,’ she said waspishly.

‘For everything spectacular Piya the topnotch actress has done, this must be the downslide indeed. To tamely sit across her husband and rationally chat over the break-up of her marriage,’ he jibed harshly.

‘However, I think it’s time for you to take a step down from the pedestal.’
